1 in every 10 children in Malaysia is a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of someone they know.

Here’s how you can join us in the fight against CSA.

Malaysia scored 0/100 for Internet Protection in the Out of the Shadows Index and 20/100 for accessible support programmes for victims.

Facts about Online Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) and Exploitation

  • Internet service providers are not required to block and/or remove CSA and exploitation materials.
  • Sexual harassment is yet to receive legal recognition in Malaysia.
  • Although sex with (or rather, the rape of) a child is strictly prohibited, the Penal Code exempts intercourse between a man and his underage wife, further vindicating child marriages.

Monsters Among Us (MAU) is a non-profit organisation that combats systemic violence against children in Malaysia through youth-led child rights advocacy.

Title of the episode: “My Month Anniversary”

*Week 3: 17th October - 21st October*

Dear Diary,

"Mental Health is not a destination, but a process"

was a quote I read while making MAU's poster for World Mental Health Day 2022. This week was eventful because we had consecutive posts on Mental Health, Deepavali, and Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). Furthermore, we were preparing for the ultimate "Through Our Lens" Graduation Ceremony! The week started with me doing experimental design on mental health posters for MAU. Since fir wasn't here, I had no design guru. Hence, I had to make a poster, which was quite challenging as this was my first design for MAU. Then, we posted the CSAM content, and I wrote it! I especially enjoyed this post because it intrigued me to explore how a parent would deal with their child coming across explicit content. Reading multiple articles on this topic taught me how we can effectively and calmly handle the situation. (Head on to our Instagram post to read more...). The articles spoke about the importance of communication with the child and educating them about it. I had MAU's volunteer, Henry, help me design the poster. Henry aided with the Deepavali poster as well!

The next thing I worked on that week was emcee scripts for the Through Our Lens (TOL) Graduation ceremony! It was a hell lot of fun! Our child advocates were energetic and incredibly passionate about their project, and their dedication to planning the content for the scripts was fun to watch. We had Farisa from MAU supporting us through this process. The script had to be entertaining but straightforward so our audience could stay energised. With my limited stage experience and content writing skills, I tried helping them with speech starters, presentations, and smooth-flow tips. Sense of humour wasn't my cup of tea, though, haha! And with a blink of an eye, this week ended.

Week 4: 24th October - 28th October

Bonjour Diary,

It's been a busy few weeks at my internship, and it's only just getting started! I've worked with a great team, and we're all getting along well. With a "New Week, New Start" attitude, I started walking the journey of my fourth week with MAU! oooh, month-versary too!! This week was busy busy! But GUESS WHAT..."WELCOME BACK FIR!" sweet! The moment the lady came back, we started work again- sheesh! We had a rough start with loads of catching ups but eventually, we got back on track and everything went well!

I met the web designer, Fahim, and about all the magic he has been making with the content we provided him. Having website meetings is exciting because my instructions sound like a "wannabe website developer" but I fail ever so miserably because I don't know how to code, lol. Either way, one of the many contents I provided for the website that week was a Child Rights Writeup! This is the first time I am writing about children's rights on a professional platform, and I am excited to put this out there into the world because talking about children's rights is one of my biggest passions. Did you know? Although birth registration is a fundamental right of every child, it is estimated that there are 50,000 undocumented children in Malaysia... hmm I didn't know that either! Additionally, there is a strict Malaysian law that restricts publishing of any media content featuring a child (Section 15, Children Act 2001), which restricts the media from portraying children negatively. It was enlightening to come across all this knowledge!

The next thing I did that week was finish up the emcee scripts for the 30th of October 2022 Through Our Lens Graduation Ceremony! The talented child advocates made a fantastic script and both Farisa and I were in awe. The only thing left was to watch them shine on stage like rockstars, wohoo! (More about this next week, after the event!) The week ended with a sweet face-to-face meeting at NU Sentral with the Executive Team members (Fir & Mahera). We performed a rehearsal for the graduation ceremony and I had goosebumps! Really, Can't wait to see the show roll out 'smooth like butter' -BTS <3 All in all, it was a really exciting and productive week for us at MAU!. Stay tuned for Instagram stories to be a part of the crazy event with us :)

Title of the episode: Fir is Leaving!...

Week 1: 3rd October - 7th October

Dear Diary,

“Learn, Contribute & Grow” are the three words I would use to describe my internship with Monsters Among Us (MAU). It was nothing but a massive rush of bliss within my veins when I found out I passed the 2nd stage of the application process, which is *drumrolls* the INTERVIEW. The founder, Fir and Executive Officer, Mahera, were benign and pleasant human beings, and I felt warm and welcomed from the very first day! Let's jump into some fun bits now!

NO, NO, hold on! Before we start, here are a few things to note! :D *takes out pen and notepad*

Note #1: My internship started on the 26th of September. However, this “Intern’s Diary” will date from the 3rd of October since your girl can only be so productive…I thought it would be much easier to start in October hehe.

Note #2: Fir is leaving! Uhuh, heard that right, my friends. SHE IS. She is going to Nepal for 3 weeks...3 WEEKS! To climb MOUNT EVEREST! (i am not joking) though it is a base camp but BEST OF LUCK, FIR! This means, Mahera and I have to show real 'autonomy power' to complete the work!

Okay, Let’s Begin!

The week started with our weekly meeting on Monday! Given my background and experience in copywriting, Fir knew she had to exploit them to the max ;( Hence my first few tasks were based around that. We are currently working on a GRAND FAQ.pdf for MAU, which shall answer all the frequently asked questions by everyone! From what MAU is to what MAU has been. Everything. Later that week, Fir & I hopped on a meeting with the ever-so-talented web developer (yes, he is uploading this from google docs to the laporpredator.org website. A shout-out to him!) to discuss how we can provide a better user experience!

Since it was just the first week, Fir (our kind godmother) didn’t assign much work. However, before leaving, she did provide Mahera and me a beautiful but extensive task sheet document entailing the next 3 weeks, which you readers and I shall voyage together!

Week 2: 10th October - 14th October

Not gonna lie; the 2nd week was monotonous. Fir left, Mahera and I had loads to do, and most of my work felt like freelancing! Nevertheless, this allowed me to explore how MAU works around its Media and Communication and that I would have much to do in that sector! Shout-out to Henry, our social media volunteer who works really hard on some of the posts that go out there on our social media page. In fact, Henry and I just got on a call last night to schedule the EXCITING content calendar for October! To keep the suspense, I shall give you one hint. Just one. We have something BIG happening on the 30th of October!!!

And, with that suspense, I shall stop typing or falling asleep on this keyboard at 3am and journal this entry for you. See you in two weeks. Till then, Good Night :)

'Through Our Lens' : Fighting child sexual abuse together with children!

On 30th October 2022, Through Our Lens Graduation Ceremony was held at Gaia Space, Shah Alam for 17 of our child advocates aged between 12 to 18 years old. The event was hosted to celebrate the important and impressive work that our child advocates have organised amongst themselves including developing their advocacy skills through child rights workshops, contributing at consultations and executing their very own micro-projects.

“Today here we are, Standing up for the rest of the world, Today here we are, Defending every single boy and girl.”

Yashmita Sarna, MAU Child Advocate’s Poem entitled, “I proudly say..”

Through Our Lens project aims to develop child advocates who are aware of their rights and able to exercise them; to protect themselves and their peers from sexual violence against children; and to strengthen MAU's capacity as a children-centric NGO to implement initiatives that reflect the needs of our children more accurately.

During the Through Our Lens Graduation Ceremony, MAU showcased a line of amazing forum speakers by Cikgu Rahayu, Social and Education Activist from MUDA, Jason Wee, Co-founder of Architects of Diversity and Ain Husniza, Advocate for #MakeSchoolASaferPlace through the Young Changemakers Call to Action Forum.

Our very own outstanding children advocates proudly shared about their amazing micro-projects which ranged from different topics such as Cyberbullying, Domestic Violence, Child Marriage Debate and Sexual Harassment.

“Children in schools are conditioned to believe that their opinions and thoughts are unimportant. We observe that whenever a posed to a group of students, no one would answer it. We need to tackle this. Creating space for children to participate is one issue, making children believe that they should participate is another.”

Jason Wee, Architects of Diversity

In Malaysia, institutional injustices and social norms have sustained a status quo of silencing and stigmatising violence against children, which violates their human rights. Their interests are not represented in legislation, government policies and programmes. Discriminatory social norms have also an impact on the abilitychildren to realise their rights to protection and participation who come from groups with disabilities, living in rural and remote areas, sexual minority adolescents and stateless, undocumented and refugee adolescents. Efforts to confront violence against children will not succeed unless founded on what children and young people themselves need.

This requires involving them as active participants in finding solutions to issues affecting them, in accordance with their age and evolving capacities.
“A simple scenario for us to ponder upon - holidays in schools; are children consulted on deciding which days should be their holidays? Many important positions that involve decision making regarding children’s lives are all monopolised by adults, where are the children? We should start treating children as equal decision makers.”

Cikgu Rahayu
